Canberrans or 'Ken-behrens' as they are affectionately known, have a long and proud history of democracy in action. If there is injustice, corruption or inaction going on, you can be sure that Canberra will show up to call it out and demand that the people in positions of power do better. They're savvy, they understand the system and their spidey senses let them know when someone is trying to bullshit them.
For anyone who has a healthy relationship with their humanity...watching Palestinians, particularly children, being blown to pieces, maimed, terrorised and starved has been traumatic to say the least. Our government has an obligation under the Genocide Convention to do everything in its power to prevent genocide from happening. To date, the Australian Government has not only failed in its duty to act...it has been complicit in aiding Israel with diplomatic cover and weapons, despite Israel's innumerable war crimes. It has gaslit anyone who has opposed the genocide and tried its best to silence criticism. But the tide is turning, support for Palestine has been steadily growing and it's getting harder for the Government to do nothing. Hot on the heels of last month's record breaking March for Humanity across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, there have been huge protests all around Australia calling for full sanctions on Israel, an embargo on two way arms trade & adherence of international law. It's not just Palestinians that the people are supporting, it's an end to genocide, occupation, colonisation and fascism right across the world.
I've been privileged to capture many of the protests in Canberra over the last two years but yesterday's March for Palestine was particularly inspiring. So many good humans getting together, so many Canberrans from all walks of life, making their way across Commonwealth Bridge up to Parliament House in a show of humanity and justice. So many people all around Australia doing the same, they are the best of us, the grit in the gears of the war machine. Long live social justice and Free Palestine.
Here are just a few of the Good Humans of Canberra...til next time xx Em
